Getting Started in Virtual Worlds

We hope you will choose to join us on Inspiration Island!

Maybe you are looking for educational opportunities in a 3D environment, or wish to travel to worlds you would never be able to visit in your "real life". Or perhaps you want to attend a theater production, enjoy a live music event or develop your own line of digital clothing? Whatever your desires, you can enjoy them right from the comfort of your home computer.

If you have never ventured into virtual worlds before,  you will be amazed at what is possible and how real it feels to experience life through your avatar's eyes.

THREE STEPS of PREPARATION - ALL FREE:

  1. Create a Grid Account and Avatar Name. (Grid= your virtual world, Avatar = your virtual body, just like the movie!);
  2. Download Viewer  Software (this software is your doorway to virtual worlds);
  3. Log In and join us on Inspiration Island!

It looks like a lot, but it's not.  We have simply provided step-by-step instructions for those that need assistance with the process. Just take it one simple step at a time! Let's get started!

1. CREATE A GRID ACCOUNT and AVATAR - IT's FREE

The link below will open up a new tab on your browser.

During Registration:  WRITE DOWN your Avatar Name and Password for reference later.  Just do it!  Also, in the referral section, please consider putting "Inspiration Island"

After Registration:

  1. Check your email for the activation link. THIS IS REQUIRED.
  2. Return to this page for the remaining instructions.

Click this link to reach our SECURE AVATAR CREATION FORM on OurGrid.Life.

Once you have an avatar account you need to download the software app that allows you to operate that avatar in a virtual world.

2. DOWNLOAD VIEWER APP

Important Information:  "Viewer Software" is required to access virtual worlds. There are many App options but we are going to walk you through the most popular: Firestorm Viewer.  If this most common option doesn't get along with your graphics card, there are many others you can try.

Let's download Firestorm Viewer now and check it out.

If you have a 64 bit machine: choose Firestorm 64 bit.

If you have a  32 bit machine: choose Firestorm 32 bit.

*DO NOT download the Firestorm that is for SecondLife only. Choose the OpenSim and SL Option.

Click the link below and choose your operating system:

3. LOG IN TO INSPIRATION ISLAND

Open your downloaded viewer and follow these instructions. It's as easy as ABC!

A.  ADDING OURGRID.LIFE to Viewer Configuration. (Basically, we need to put our address in the GPS).

Use the graphic as an aid.  Text instructions below:

  1. Pull down menu Viewer / Choose Preferences.
  2. Left side menu, Choose OpenSim Button.
  3. In the input area for Add New Grid type: OurGrid.Life
  4. Click the Apply Button.

To confirm you added the grid correctly, scroll down the list of grid addresses.  You will now see OurGrid.Life with a login URI of OurGrid.Life:80.  If you don't see it, click the refresh button. If you STILL don't see it, something went wrong.  Try again.

B. TIME TO LOG IN!
(
Please note that you will receive an authentication email after creating your avatar account. YOU MUST AUTHENTICATE your email to LOG IN.  See you on the island soon!)

Click log in and see you on the other side!

C. LANDING ON INSPIRATION ISLAND

HOW TO MOVE.  The Arrow keys or WASD keys will get you started. For complete instructions on movement or everything virtual world, visit the Virtual World Survival Trail and Guide. Just point your mouse at the provided signs and click for immediate teleport transport.

Here's what you will see when you land on Inspiration Island:

Just past the landing, you will find our Easy Teleport Station.  Feel free to wander around and explore, but if you want immediate teleport transport to a specific area on the island, just use your mouse to click on a sign.
